Schroth method
What is the Schroth Method?
The Schroth method is a physiotherapeutic intervention for the treatment of scoliosis and kyphosisrecognised by international scientific communities, including the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) and the Society On Scoliosis Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Treatment (SOSORT). The fundamental principles of this treatment encompass corrective breathing techniques and specialised isometric exercises. These techniques aim to rectify rotation, elongate, and stabilise the spine within a three-dimensional plane.
In our physiotherapy clinic, the Schroth method can be applied to people of all ages to restore the curve of the spine. This is achieved through changing the asymmetric load on the body, strengthening the core muscles, and exercising conscious control over movements, all in conjunction with breathing techniques.

What does the Schroth Method involve?
The Schroth method uses exercises adapted to the type of scoliosis of each person, which basically asymmetrically strengthen the scoliotic or kyphotic body.
At PHYSIO4U in Rethymno, the Schroth exercise programme is practiced exclusively by qualified physiotherapists, while in most cases, the programme is accompanied by a personalised exercise plan, which patients can – and are recommended to – perform on their own at home. Factors such as the patient’s age, problem severity and daily habits are crucial for preparing a successful treatment plan using the Schroth method.
The first session includes the clinical evaluation and medical history. Then, the physiotherapist guides the patient through specific exercises, focusing on the::
• restoration of muscle symmetry
• body posture alignment
• application of rotational angular breathing
• training of the individual, so that they maintain the therapeutic corrections in their daily life
The exercises can be performed in a standing, lying or sitting position, while we often use lightweight accessories, such as therapy balls, elastic bands and Schroth poles, wall bars, etc.

What are the benefits of the Schroth Method?
The Physiotherapy using the Schroth method is proven to significantly help prevent the progression of scoliosis and kyphosis, thereby reducing the likelihood of future surgical intervention to address the patient's condition.
After completing a cycle of Schroth sessions (usually lasting about 12 weeks), patients can expect a significant improvement in spine degrees, as well as reduced to diminished scoliosis or kyphosis-induced pain.
Following the advice and plan of the physiotherapist, patients achieve:
• Improved body posture
• Improved breathing quality
• Avoidance of brace application to minor scoliosis (less than 25 degrees)
• Reduction of joint pain resulting from muscle imbalances
• Enhanced mobility and flexibility
• Improved appearance and therefore higher self-confidence

Treatment using the Schroth method has results and can be applied at all stages of scoliosis or kyphosis, regardless of age. It is also recommended as a maintenance method for people who have undergone surgery for scoliosis or even alongside with the simultaneous use of a brace.
What you need to know regarding your first appointment
Save valuable time by coming prepared to your first appointment at the PHYSIO4U physiotherapy centre: bring everything that is necessary for us to start your case assessment right away!
Medication
Make a list of the medications you are taking and give this information to your physiotherapist during the assessment.
Recent tests
Make sure you have your most recent medical diagnosis with you, along with the results of any recent tests, such as x-rays, CT or MRI scans, etc.
Comfortable clothing
Wear comfortable clothes, especially in the area of the body that is affected or painful. This will allow the physiotherapist to better access that area and carry out the treatment most effectively. In addition, comfortable clothing will allow you to feel at ease and relaxed during the session.
